Higher education (H. ed.) in Italy typically has three cycle programs based on which they offer their degree courses. US students are eligible to apply to each of these cycles and get through their admissions too, on approval.
You need to make application for the respective cycle, along with submitting your documents, which include proof of your schooling. Schooling has to be at least for a minimum of 12 years. Also, you need to be skilled in Italian, for which you might require giving a test.
Once you complete your first cycle program, you can similarly apply for the second, and so on.
A student visa is approved and applicable for applicants looking for admissions in H. Ed. courses in the country. This is the only visa that is a must for an international student, including US student to apply for education in Italy.
Other Visas are not accepted for educational purposes. You must arrange for your accommodation too, and also have proof of sufficient finances to cover for your educational and stay expenses until the completion of your study.
Most students who come to Italy for higher studies have visas valid only till the duration of the educational course, so you need to start looking for jobs early if you want to stay back in Italy.
